Mets Fire Jared Porter After ESPN Reveals Story of His Harassment of Female Journalist in 2016
An ESPN story written by Senior MLB Insider Jeff Passan and Senior Writer Mina Kimes revealed shocking details regarding text messages and lewd images sent by Jared Porter to a female journalist in 2016 (click the link for full details). Upon its publication last night, Mets’ President Sandy Alderson immediately released a statement disclosing the organization’s next steps.
Today, the Mets decided to fire Porter once the organization confirmed that he did indeed send the explicit images to the woman in 2016. According to ESPN, Porter sent 62 consecutive unanswered messages to the journalist, including a photo of a naked male. The harassment culminated in the woman leaving the sports journalism industry.
Porter was hired by the Mets to a 4-year deal just 46 days ago, on December 13th. The Mets hoped he would become a major part of a rapid culture change within the organization. Instead, the club will move on and search for a new General Manager. Porter’s firing comes just one offseason after the team parted ways with Carlos Beltrán prior to his first game as a manager, after his involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal was revealed.
Update (1/19/21): Mets’ President Sandy Alderson announced in a press conference that the organization will proceed until next offseason without a general manager.
