Steve Cohen became the new majority owner of the Mets this offseason, but that was just the beginning of a series of changes to the organization. Cohen cleaned house on his first day, including letting go of then General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

Today, the Mets filled that position by hiring Jared Porter, according to MLB Network’s Insider Jon Heyman. He first started in the Boston Red Sox organization as an intern in 2004 and 2005. He then rose throughout the ranks from Player Development Assistant (2006-2007) to Coordinator of Professional Scouting (2008-2009) to Assistant Director of Professional Scouting (2010-2011). Eventually, he became the Director of Professional Scouting for the Sox (2012-2015). He then moved to Chicago, where he served as Director of Professional Scouting/Special Assistant (2016-2017). His last stop prior to the Mets was in Arizona, where he held the title of Senior Vice President & Assistant General Manager from 2018 through this past season.

Porter and Diamondbacks’ General Manager Mike Hazen had previously worked together in the Red Sox organization.

This is the first time in Porter’s career that he has become a General Manager. After working for four different World Series championship teams (2004, 2007, 2013 & 2016), the Mets hope the trend of winning continues.

Update December 13, 2020: The Mets officially announced Porter as GM under a four-year deal.
