Astros’ Fans Are Mad at Commissioner Rob Manfred for Opening Houston’s Roof Tonight

Ahh, how quickly a fan base can forget. Commissioner Rob Manfred is now Public Enemy No. 1 in H-Town after demanding the Astros to open their roof for Game 2 of the World Series. This is the same commissioner who refused to rule with an iron fist when clear evidence was presented which put the Astros at the center of the sport’s biggest cheating scandal in a century. This is also the same commissioner who waited until Gerrit Cole exited Houston to look into the enforcement against foreign substances on the pitcher’s mound. Time and time again the Houston Astros have avoided Rob Manfred’s rule.
But now, Rob Manfred has ordered the roof at Minute Maid Park to be open for Game 2 of the World Series. Finally, the commissioner is going to hit the Astros where it hurts. This team gains a huge advantage with their roof closed and that is being stripped away by a man in a suit from New York. It is so unfair, right? Wait, what’s that? Oh, the ‘Stros are 0-5 in their last 5 World Series games played at The Juice Box — all with the roof closed, including Game 1 last night.
So maybe this is not a big deal after all. Commissioner Manfred is not out to get the Astros, and there is not even a proven benefit provided by the roof being closed. Show up and play ball.
Side note: Minute Maid Park has to be one of the best ballparks in baseball. Usually I am not a fan of indoor ballparks (which MMP usually is), but Houston does it right. The unique field dimensions are cool, the leaf-green batter’s eye is awesome, the train tracks are a nice touch, and the lighting is great for big games. I even like it better with the roof closed. It is a shame the hill in center field had to be removed, which was understandable since it sparked concerns about injuries to outfielders. It will be interesting to see it with the roof opened in a big game.
