Vin Scully Called Tonight The Biggest Dodgers-Giants Game Ever And He Is Probably Right

Tonight is NLDS Game 5. Winner takes all. No, it is not the NLCS or the World Series, but this is where the Postseason matchup with the most combined wins in history will be found. The Giants, who were not a popular pick to even make the Postseason in spring training, reeled off 107 wins en route to the NL West title. The Dodgers lurked behind them for what felt like an eternity, but ultimately never caught up to their upstate rivals. Los Angeles completed its season with 106 wins, then won the NL Wild Card Game on a walk-off home run by Chris Taylor.

All of that brought us to the NLDS. Baseball’s two best teams are going head-to-head in a do-or-die game after splitting the first four matchups of the series. Longtime Dodgers’ broadcaster (who you definitely already know), Vin Scully, called this “the most important game in the history of (the Dodgers-Giants) rivalry.”

He is not wrong.

Yes, the 1951 Bobby Thomson Shot Heard ‘Round The World sent the Giants to the World Series, but the Yankees were waiting for the winner of that game with open arms. Plus, the year-long heavyweight fight that has gone on between the Giants and Dodgers just makes this one a little more special. The winner of this game has a real, real shot at bringing home a World Series title.

The Dodgers have decided to go with Corey Knebel as the “opener” for regular season 20-game winner Julio Urías tonight. The Giants are giving the ball to Logan Webb, who shut down the Dodgers earlier in the series. It may be Corey Seager’s final game in a Dodgers’ uniform. It may be Buster Posey’s final game in a Giants’ uniform (less likely). In the end, one fan base will be ecstatic and the other will be crushed, and that is what makes a game a big game.
