Yankees Add Another Bullpen Arm: Justin Wilson Returns to the Yanks
In what may be the final bullpen add of the offseason, the Yankees have signed lefty Justin Wilson to a one-year deal, according to WFAN’s Sweeny Murti. You might remember Wilson from 2015 when he made 74 appearances for the Yanks. He covered 61 innings with a 3.10 ERA, so he was certainly effective back then. However, in the following offseason he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Chad Green and Luis Cessa. Now, Wilson will be joining those two in the Yankees’ bullpen.
The Bombers traded reliever Adam Ottavino to the Red Sox last month, freeing up roughly $9 million between the current payroll amount and the Competive Balance Tax threshold. The team signed reliever Darren O’Day and now obtained Wilson, yet remains under the tax. The Yankees will have to make room on the 40-man roster due to the acquisition of Wilson.
The lefty put up a 3.66 ERA in 19.2 innings for the cross-town rival New York Mets last season. Now, the Yankees’ bullpen will consist, at least, of Aroldis Chapman, Zack Britton, Green, O’Day, Cessa, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Nick Nelson.
