Yankees: Bring Him Home

There have been few occasions in my lifetime where I have been faced with a decision as easy to make as what the Yankees have on their hands today. This one is a no-brainer. Captain Obvious himself would think it goes without saying.

The Yankees need to bring back Derek Jeter.

In case you missed it, our beloved Captain has resigned effective immediately from the Marlins. He is no longer in the ownership group or the front office down in Miami. At this point, it is safe to say that he is already searching for a job in baseball, and he will find one.

The Yankees’ mission here is clear: put Jeter in the front office and let him do anything he can to help this franchise win. Pay him whatever he wants, too. He is the greatest living Yankee and his off the field reputation has been the most respected in baseball since the 90’s. What it means to “be a Yankee” was essentially shaped by Jeter himself.

However, my gut tells me none of this will happen. Maybe Derek wants to stay in Florida (although there could be a way to work something out near the Tampa complex). Maybe Jeter wants more control than the Yankees would be willing to offer. But all I know is this: the Yankees would be better with him than with anyone else, so anything other than an absolute all-out-attack to bring him home would be a massive failed opportunity.
