Sam Fuld to Become Phillies’ General Manager
In the same month that Dave Dombrowski was named the President of Baseball Operations in Philadelphia, the Phillies have chosen a new General Manager. Sam Fuld will become the second former player with a degree from a prestigious academic institution to land a GM job this offseason. Rangers’ new GM Chris Young is a Princeton graduate and Fuld earned a degree from Stanford.
Fuld played in eight major league seasons from 2007 to 2015. He maintained limited roles on the Cubs, Rays, Twins, and Athletics during his career. He was nearly hired as manager of the Red Sox this offseason, as he was a finalist with Alex Cora. Instead, Fuld will jump right to General Manager and continue his work to bring a championship to Philadelphia.
Former players currently in media regard Fuld as a great baseball mind. Trevor Plouffe, a former teammate of Fuld and current co-host of Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Baseball, has sung Fuld’s praises for months on their podcast. Plouffe talked about how Fuld was seen as a leader in the clubhouse, even as a role player.
Fuld is no stranger to the Phillies’ organization. He served as major league Player Information Coordinator from 2017 to 2020, then became Director of Integrative Performance for this past season. He even played centerfield in a Summer Camp game. At age 39, he joins the ranks of young general managers throughout the game.
