Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner Corey Kluber in Agreement With Yankees
The Yankees’ busy day continues, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported (with some help from Jomboy Media’s Jake Storiale) that the Bombers are in agreement with starting pitcher Corey Kluber, pending a physical.
Reports indicate the deal will be for one year and $11 million. Earlier this week, Kluber threw a bullpen session in front of tens of scouts, front office members, and coaches from across the league. Rumors swirled about the excitement of those who looked on, as Kluber touched 90 mph with his fastball and threw all of his breaking pitches, supposedly hitting his spots with ease.
The veteran righthander has strong connections to the Yankees. Kluber has been working with Yankees’ Director of Player Health and Performance, Eric Cressey during his rehab. Yankees’ pitching coach Matt Blake is familiar with Kluber as well, as he served as Director of Pitching Development for Cleveland while Kluber was there. Kluber was the 40th ranked free agent on Lunch Break Baseball’s Free Agency Tracker.
Kluber should get the chance to take the ball every fifth day and use this deal as a “prove it” opportunity before hitting free agency again next winter.
