Just five days prior to Opening Day, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters today that Luke Voit will begin the season on the injured list. Voit suffered a partially torn meniscus in his left knee and will have surgery to repair the injury.

Last season, Voit led the major leagues with 22 home runs. He was bothered by plantar fasciitis and received a platelet-rich plasma injection in November. He was able to play through the season with a limp. This year it is the knee bothering Voit, so he decided not to play through another nagging ailment and will miss at least three weeks of baseball activity. The Yankees expect Voit to return in May. In fact, Boone said Voit is likely to return “considerably sooner (than June).”

His injury opened up a starting spot at first base. To fill the role, the team informed veteran non-roster invite Jay Bruce that he will indeed make the Opening Day roster. Bruce was selected instead of Mike Ford or fellow non-roster invite Derek Dietrich.

Although the injury helped the Yankees in avoiding some tough roster decisions, the solution did not arrive in the fashion the organization particularly desired.
